uniquely Melaka delicacy, the satay celup (celup: dip). It is basically
a type of steamboat on with the assortment of raw and semi-cooked
seafood, meat and vegetables on skewers that are dunked into a boiling
pot of water and eaten with sauce that is similar to the ubiquitous
satay sauce but has different ingredients.
Capitol Satay Celup, is operated by Low Yong Cheng's family. We have been in the satay celup business since the mid-1950s. My grandfather used a kandar stick to carry his wares in two baskets (one for the fresh food, the other for the stove and sauce).
We serve over 80 types of seafood and vegetables are served here. The
fresh food is kept very fresh via huge refrigerators at the back and
open fridges with shelves at the dining hall. The sauce is constantly on
the boil and replaced for each new customer. Self-service is the mode
of service here. Once you get a table, you go get a tray and collect
your food, all of which are skewered using foot-long bamboo sticks.
These are to be dipped into the sauce and accompany the other food you
cook.
